But
hair plugs represent an important
evolutionary step toward modern hair
restoration which today utilizes 1 and 2
hair grafts to mimic mother nature's own
creation. During the 1970s and 80s,
doctors were transplanting larger
sections which consisted of 10 or more
hairs. These hair plugs could not imitate
mother nature's method of grouping hairs
in follicular units and were noticable.
Unskilled physicians often implanted them
at irregular angles causing the hair to
grow in differing angles to adjacent
plugs. Doctors at that time also favored
planting the large plugs along the
frontal hair line, and only the frontal
hair line, instructing patients to grow
their hair long and sweep it back over
the bald mid-scalp and vertex areas.Fortunately, those days are
long gone and hair plugs have moved into
hair transplant history. Hair restoration
doctors today will not implant hair
plugs, even if you requested them.
Follicular Units
During the first part of the 1990s, hair
transplant techniques advanced by light
years brought on by the increasing demand
for plastic surgery. Doctors refined
their harvesting techniques from punch
grafts to donor strips, and from hair
plugs to mini grafts, micro grafts and
now follicular units.
Follicular units have
become the standard by which all hair
transplant doctors and clinics now work
with. Occuring in groups of 1, 2, 3 and
sometimes 4 hair follicles found in the
skin growing together. By implanting
these naturally occuring units, doctors
work within the norms of mother nature,
providing results that are natural
looking and undetectable.
Correcting old
Hair Plugs
One hair transplant
clinic in particular has seen and
improved upon the experience left behind
by the old hair plug style.
